The founder of Wal-Mart was once asked how much money was enough. His answer was simple and elegant, "Just a little more." Jason repeated that quote once when his wife asked him the same thing about his lust for knowledge. He had always been one of the world's brightest. He was Home-schooled in his Georgian home, took the GED at 16, aced his SATs, and graduated with his doctorate in physics from MIT at the age of 25. Sadly, Jason was born with a great yearning in his heart, an emptiness that nothing seemed to be able to fill. Learning and experimentation were his drugs of choice, but the more he learned the more he became of his own growing dissatisfaction with the world.
At the urgings of his mentor, Professor Donald Smith, Jason tried to find himself through community service. Upon completing his doctorate, he joined the Peace Corp. He wound up in a rural village in India. There he experienced the pains of the world—hunger, poverty, murder, rape, and the depths of human cruelty. He began to put a face to the burning inside his heart.
It was also there that he had his first personal brush with Buddhism, Super-Heroes, and his wife. There was a temple a small ways beyond his village, and he would often talk with the monks there. One of them, claiming to have reached enlightenment, was the local hero. They would often talk about life, the universe, and everything when Jason wasn't working. In addition, he had grown close to one of his co-workers who was experiencing similar life-dilemmas, Dr. Natalee Higgans from Vermont. She was a medical doctor and they both agreed that helping others was the only thing that truly satisfied them, even temporarily. So, in order to do the most good they could, they began building inventions for superheroes in their spare time.
After his time in the Peace Corp, Natalee went back home Jason joined the Buddhist temple. He desired the same inner peace that the monks had, and thought he was willing to do anything to get it. He accepted the workload and humbled himself. Sadly, when it came to actual spiritual insight, his overly analytical mind did not lend itself well to the process. Ultimately, he left the temple in frustration and made his way back to the states—where he found and married Natalee. Stateside, he and his wife continued their hobby of creating inventions for supers, and thanks to working for several supers whose power was effectively "lots of money," they managed to do well for themselves.
Then entered a man by the name of Dr. Mungro, a fellow physicist who took an interest in Dr. Massanova's papers on theoretical inter-dimensional physics. He recruited Dr. Massanova to work on a secret experiments by telling him that there was theoretically a way to reach Nirvana through science, rather than religion. It was when he first became secretive towards his wife and friends. As time went on, he spent more and more time hidden away, working on the secret project, believing it to be the key to his happiness.
His wife didn't know what happened until a small town in Massachusetts simply ceased to exist one morning. There was no explosion, no fanfare, and no one even noticed until a delivery truck had attempted to cross into town, only to find empty wasteland. It was headline news for two weeks and then, out of nowhere, the lost town began to materialize and rain down as debris. There were only two survivors, Dr. Massanova, and Dr. Mungro. The resulting investigation took two years before Dr. Massanova was alleviated from guilt and Dr. Mungro was forced to serve one life sentence for each individual life lost.
Jason never quite reached the Nirvana he was promised. Dr. Mungro had, in actuality, wanted to punch a hole into the origin of the universe, and then use that to collect all of the universe's energy and allow for military strikes (with robots) at any point. Both Dr. Mungro's lies and his theories were drastically beyond what was real. A lab explosion placed Jason, Dr. Mungro, and the entire town on the event horizon of non-existance. Only Jason and Dr. Mungro had the brain power to retain a sense of self there, and together they managed to build a device to return home. However, being thrust to the edge of oblivion and watching the universe turn left them both changed.
Jason came back blind, with all but the faintest of memories erased, and the ability to fold space in on itself. He still hasn't told anyone, least of all his wife, what he can do or what he remembers of what happened. However, after the initial trauma of the event subsided, his inner child leaped for joy, and he saw it as his opportunity to play out his fantasies of being a hero. He and his wife moved to Epitome City to escape the press and start fresh. Jason donned a super suit designed to transform him mental power into physical power and awareness, and gave birth to Pathway.
